At HAPPI Health, caring for our patients goes beyond what happens inside the exam room. Sometimes, better health starts with making sure someone has food on the table, a safe place to live, access to their medications or simply someone willing to listen.

For Amanda Chambers, LMSW, Care Manager at HAPPI Health, helping patients navigate those challenges is at the heart of what she does.

A Career Built Around Helping Others

Amanda’s journey in healthcare began more than two decades ago.

She earned her associate degree in medical assisting and spent 22 years working in the field. After her child graduated from high school, Amanda decided it was time to return to the classroom herself.

She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology, specializing in child and adolescent care, before going on to receive her Master of Social Work from the University of North Alabama.

For Amanda, continuing her education was a natural extension of something that had motivated her throughout her career: helping people.

“I chose the career path in healthcare 24 years ago because I like to help people,” Amanda said.

Finding Her Place at HAPPI Health

Amanda joined HAPPI Health in 2023, initially working as a medical assistant in Behavioral Health while she was still completing her psychology degree.

That experience gave her an opportunity to connect with patients on a different level.

Working closely with patients allowed Amanda to learn more about their lives — not only their medical needs, but also their struggles, accomplishments, sadness and happiness.

“I really learned how to speak with them on a deeper level, getting to know them, their lives, their sadness, their happiness, anything that was going on with them,” she said.

Those relationships helped strengthen Amanda’s desire to pursue social work.

“I care about people more than I realized I did in the beginning,” Amanda said. “I want to see them succeed. I want to see them have a fulfilling life.”

Caring for the Whole Person

Today, Amanda serves as a Care Manager at HAPPI Health, where her work focuses on helping patients with needs that can affect their overall health and quality of life.

A patient may have access to a healthcare provider, but other challenges can make it difficult to stay healthy. Food insecurity, housing instability, difficulty accessing benefits or even keeping up with medications and appointments can create additional barriers.

That is where Amanda can help.

She reaches out to patients to check on their basic needs and connect them with available resources. That may include helping someone find food assistance, apply for SNAP benefits, locate housing resources or navigate other community services.

Amanda also checks in with patients about medication refills and follow-up appointments, helping them stay connected to their healthcare.

For her, it is all part of keeping what she calls the “flow of a better life going.”

Sometimes, You Just Need Someone to Listen

Not every need can be solved with an application or referral. Sometimes people simply need someone who will listen.

Amanda wants patients — and members of the community — to know that she is that person.

“If you ever need a hug, I always give a hug,” she said. “If you need anything, I will always sit down and talk to you.”

That compassion doesn’t stop when she leaves her office.

“I don’t care if you’re a patient. I don’t care if you’re in the parking lot outside,” Amanda said. “I will have a conversation with you if you’re feeling like you’re in a bad way.”

It’s a simple philosophy that reflects an important part of HAPPI Health’s mission: healthcare is about people.

Whether she is connecting a patient with community resources, helping them stay on track with their care or simply offering a listening ear, Amanda’s goal remains the same as it was when she entered healthcare 24 years ago — to help people live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
