More Than a Requirement: Why Sports Physicals Matter

As students prepare to head back to school and athletes return to the field, court, and track, one important step shouldn't be overlooked—a sports physical.

In the latest edition of HAPPI Chat, Dr. George Kyle, Chief Medical Officer at HAPPI Health, explains why sports physicals are much more than a required form for participation. They play a vital role in protecting the health and safety of young athletes.

A Chance to Catch Hidden Health Concerns

"Sports physicals aren't just a paperwork drill," Dr. Kyle says. "They're a very important health assessment that we encourage our young people to do."

While many children appear healthy, some underlying conditions don't become noticeable until physical activity places additional demands on the body. A sports physical helps identify potential concerns before they become serious.

For example, a child with undiagnosed asthma may not experience symptoms during everyday activities but could begin wheezing during practices or games. Identifying these issues early allows providers to develop a treatment plan before the season is underway.

Looking Beyond the Basics

At HAPPI Health, sports physicals go beyond checking boxes on a form.

Dr. Kyle incorporates a brief exercise test during many physicals to evaluate how a young athlete's heart and lungs respond to activity.

During the assessment, patients perform simple squats for about 30 seconds before Dr. Kyle listens to their heart and breathing.

This short period of exercise can reveal subtle heart murmurs, breathing changes, or signs of exercise-induced asthma that may not be detectable while the patient is at rest.

"It's a great way to hear minor defects that otherwise you would not hear at rest," Dr. Kyle explains.

Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

One of the biggest mistakes families make is waiting until just before the season begins to schedule a sports physical.

If a provider identifies a concern, additional testing or referrals to specialists—such as a cardiologist or pulmonologist—may be necessary. Scheduling a physical early gives families enough time to complete any follow-up care without delaying an athlete's participation.

"The earlier we get those sports physicals done, the better," Dr. Kyle says.
